Designing web sites for Intranets and Extranets
What is an intranet or extranet?
The dictionary definition
of an Intranet or extranet is:
"A privately maintained computer
network that can be accessed only by authorized persons,
especially members or employees of the organization that
owns it." definition
Basically, an intranet is a large corporate web site that is either contained in an internal network or behind a series of security features.
Most large organisation's have an Intranet. They are particularly useful for delivering accurate and dependable information quickly across a multi-national firm. If setup and used effectively they can become a vital part of the organisation as the information contained in them can be changed once and 'rolled out' to the whole firm instantly. There is surely no quicker way of getting information out to the whole company.
